In keeping with our theme this membership year of growth, this panel will focus on growing our perspective on issues of race and gender by examining intersectionality on the bench. Intersectionality recognizes that identity markers such as “woman” and “black” do not exist independently of each other, and that each informs the others, often creating a complex convergence of oppression. Social identities work on multiple levels, resulting in unique experiences, opportunities, and barriers for each person. We are joined by some trailblazers to discuss their journeys to the bench and obstacles they have overcome as African American women to become the judges they are today.

This year, JWLA is continuing its efforts of community outreach and giving back to the local community.  For each luncheon, we will spotlight a local charity or other nonprofit organization and will conduct a donation drive, to be collected at that month’s luncheon.  This luncheon will spotlight Women's Health Awareness Mobile.  This will be a women's health-mobile that they are looking to kick off in April, which will serve Duval, Clay, Nassau, St. John's, and Baker County. The purpose will be to promote women's health and women's necessities that are often overlooked in low-income areas. This will include every day toiletries that a woman may need, in addition to pregnancy tests, and prenatal guidance and support.
All items collected do need to be in new condition. Here are some ideas that Judge Drake has included:
  • toothbrushes/toothpaste/floss
  • soap/shampoo
  • deodorant
